Jefferson Parish Senior Citizens Task Force

In 1999, Parish President Tim Coulon formed the Jefferson Parish Task Force. Today volunteer representatives from more than 25 agencies meet monthly to address the needs of the elderly population of Jefferson Parish. These volunteers serve on a number of subcommittees, including the Senior Exposition, The Carol Scalise Award, the Senior Tack Force Directory, and more.

"Americans in general are living longer and healthier lives," President Coulon said. "By working together, these separate agencies can combine their talents towards a common goal to meet the needs of senior citizens in Jefferson Parish."

Between 1970 and 1990, the population in Jefferson Parish has aged significantly. In 1970, there were 16,000 residents 65 and older. In 1990, there were 45,000 residents 65 and older – a 175% increase or 10% of the parish’s population. The 2000 W.S. Census reports that Jefferson Parish has 54,317 citizens aged 65 and older, out of a total population of 455,466.

Goal

To create an environment within Jefferson Parish that supports the
senior population in accessing the resources needed to attain optimal
physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual health.

Strategies
  • Encourage collaboration among agencies and organizations offering services to the senior population.
  • Identify services addressing critical areas of need and to enhance access to those services.
  • Enhance the availability of information regarding services for senior population through volunteerism and the contribution of other resources.
  • encourage senior-to-senior outreach.
  • Determine a course of action in relation to the strategies to be actualized during the year.
