JEFFERSON PARISH MONITORING TROPICAL DEPRESSION #9

STORM PREP PRESS CONFERENCE TO TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY, AUG. 27, 2021 AT 2:00 P.M.

JEFFERSON, LA – Tropical Depression Nine continues northwest in the west-central Caribbean, with gradual strengthening into a tropical storm expected before entering the Southeastern Gulf late Friday or early Saturday and local impacts possible late this weekend into early next week. The Jefferson Parish Administration, along with the Emergency Management and Public Works Departments, are closely monitoring and are ready to respond accordingly. 194 permanent pumps in Jefferson Parish are currently operational and additional portable pumps have been sent to Grand Isle and Lafitte.

Now is the time to make preparations for potential heavy rainfall and street flooding. A list of tropical weather supplies, evacuation details and other critical information can be found on the Jefferson Parish Hurricane Dashboard.

Residents are encouraged to prepare by clearing leaves and debris from gutters, downspouts and in front of catch basins to help rain get to the drain. It is also encouraged that all residents place their garbage and recycling bins curbside on their scheduled collection days in anticipation of heavy rain over the weekend. If heavy rain occurs, residents should remove all bins from the curb and secure them on their property to avoid debris clogging storm drains and the loss of bins if street flooding occurs.

Residents are reminded to stay indoors and away from windows during severe weather events. In the event of a tornado, shelter in an interior room on the ground floor. During heavy rain, drivers should use caution around areas prone to significant street flooding, like streets under bridges and overpasses. Parish Ordinance Section 36-188 prohibits motorists from traveling on flooded streets, which may increase the possibility of structural flooding due to wake action caused by moving vehicles.

Testing and vaccinations at the Alario Center will close tomorrow, August 27, 2021 at noon. The Johnny Bright Playground, Delta Playground, and Bonnabel Boat Launch testing sites will close tomorrow at 4 p.m. As of now, garbage and recycling collection in Jefferson Parish will occur as scheduled and Jefferson Parish Transit is operating normal fixed-route and paratransit schedules as long as weather conditions allows. For updates on trash/recycling collection, visit www.JeffParish.net and for transit updates, visit www.JeffersonTransit.org.
