JEFFERSON PARISH PROVIDES EMERGENCY RENT, MORTGAGE AND UTILITY ASSISTANCE TO ELIGIBLE RESIDENTS DUE TO COVID-19

JEFFERSON, LA – The Jefferson Parish Community Action Programs (JeffCAP), in partnership with the Jefferson Parish Department of Community Development, is offering rental, mortgage and utility assistance to eligible residents throughout Jefferson Parish who are facing hardships due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic.

Residents must meet eligibility requirements as established by the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG), the HUD Tenant-Based Rental Assistance Program (TBRA) and Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Applicants should not apply for both CSBG and TBRA as they can only qualify for one of these grants/programs. In addition to available rental/mortgage assistance, applicants can also apply to receive utility assistance through LIHEAP. All programs will be available for a set amount of time or until funds have been expended.

CSBG provides one-time emergency rent/mortgage payment assistance to those who did not already receive assistance in 2019. CSBG applications are open June 8 – June 26, 2020. TBRA provides rental assistance through December 31, 2020; however, recipients must be willing to participate in case management activities. TBRA applications will be open June 29 – July 31, 2020. LIHEAP provides ongoing assistance for energy costs. Those who apply for assistance must be a resident of Jefferson Parish who is not a Section 8 recipient. The applicant must provide a rental/mortgage delinquency notice or proof that they are behind on their bills, in addition to a valid state ID and social security cards for all household members over 18, proof of residence, current lease agreement, proof of income and a current food stamp print out, if applicable.

Applications are available online and at Jefferson Parish Community Centers. Completed applications and supporting documents should be taken to the local community center dropbox, and appointments will be scheduled to finalize processing, which may take up to (30) days. The TBRA program, handled by the Jefferson Parish Department of Community Development, does not start until June 29, 2020; a phone number will be provided closer to the start of the program.
