FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JEFFERSON PARISH RESIDENTS REMINDED TO OBTAIN A PERMIT BEFORE REPAIRING
REBUILDING OR DEMOLISHING A STRUCTURE

Jefferson Parish Council approves to waive permit fees for damages to
structures related to Hurricane Ida

JEFFERSON, LA – Jefferson Parish residents are reminded to obtain the proper permit before repairing, rebuilding or demolishing a structure. Permits are required as part of Jefferson Parish’s participation in the National Flood Insurance Program, providing eligibility for flood insurance, flood disaster assistance, state and federal grants, loans for flood-prone property and to enforce building codes that ensure the safety of its citizens. At this time, the Department of Inspection and Code Enforcement will not charge any permit or trades filing fees related to Hurricane Ida until December 31, 2021.

Residents should apply online for a permit. If internet service is available, create an account on MyGovernmentOnline.org and apply for the proper permit. If internet or computer access is not available, computers with links to MyGovernmentOnline.org and instructions for creating an account and applying online are stationed in all of the Jefferson Parish Libraries with the exceptions of the Grand Isle and Lafitte Branches.

Permits are NOT needed for the following work:

  • Change of roof covering only and/or gutter work with respect to one- and two-family dwellings. If the roof decking needs to be replaced, a permit is required;
  • Replace soffit and/or fascia;
  • Replacement of vinyl siding or other non-structural exterior wall covering on one- or two-family dwellings only;
  • Fence repairs provided the fence remains in the existing location, is the same height, type and design and the fence is not moved from where it was pre-storm.

If electrical service was pulled from the structure, please hire a licensed electrician to file for the job, once the work has been performed, the electrician can call the department for an inspection and meter release.

If there are any problems creating an online account, please call 1-866-957-3764, ext. 1. If there are any problems while filing for a permit online, please call (504) 736-6331 for assistance during regular office hours. For questions or issues after hours, please use the “contact us” link on our webpage. For any questions or concerns, please call the Department of Inspection and Code Enforcement at (504) 736-6331 or visit the Inspection & Code Enforcement page on the Jefferson Parish website.
