JEFFERSON PARISH RESPONDS TO HURRICANE IDA

Updates as of 7 p.m. on Friday, September 3, 2021

JEFFERSON, LA – The Jefferson Parish Administration, along with the Emergency Management and Public Works Departments, continue to respond to Hurricane Ida. CLICK HERE to watch the most recent press briefing by Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng and other Parish officials (due to a power outage at the EOC last night, the press conference went dark before the council’s comments; however, these comments can be viewed on the Jefferson Parish Facebook Page). For additional information, please contact the Emergency Operations Center at (504) 349-5360 or visit www.JeffParish.net/Storm.

The following are updates as of Friday, September 3, 2021 at 7 p.m.:

Post-Storm Notice to the Public:
There is a parish-wide curfew from 6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. until Monday, September 6, 2021. The public is urged to not be on the streets at night, as there are multiple downed power lines and debris throughout the parish. Jefferson Parish officials will assess damages and keep the public informed when it is safe to go out.

Office Closures:
All Jefferson Parish Government buildings, facilities, parks and playgrounds are closed until further notice. This includes Lafreniere Park, Parc De Families, the Bonnabel Boat launch and Bucktown Harbor Marina due to debris/downed trees and power lines.

Storm-related Deaths:
As of 9 a.m. on September 4, 2021, the Louisiana Department of Health has confirmed 10 total storm-related deaths in Louisiana due to Hurricane Ida, which includes three individuals who died of carbon monoxide poisoning in Jefferson Parish: a 17-year-old male, a 23-year-old female and a 54-year-old female; a 65-year-old female who drowned in floodwaters in Jefferson Parish; and a 59-year-old female nursing home resident from Jefferson Parish which was related to a facility under investigation in Tangipahoa Parish. For more information, visit www.ldh.la.gov

Generator Safety:
Jefferson Parish reminds residents that carbon monoxide from generators is deadly. Only use a generator in a well-ventilated area and place away from structures, at least 20 feet away from your home, windows and doors. Carbon monoxide poisoning was among the leading causes of death during storm events in 2020.

Jefferson Parish Schools:
Jefferson Parish Schools will not reopen the week of September 5, 2021. All schools and buildings remain closed until further notice. Jefferson Parish Schools is currently assessing the impact of Hurricane Ida at each school. Upon reviewing those conditions, a clear path forward for learning will be provided.

Water & Sewer:
Until further notice, all of Jefferson Parish is under a boil water advisory. This boil water advisory will remain in effect until rescinded by the Jefferson Parish Water Department. Due to widespread power outages throughout Jefferson Parish, which has put a strain on the process of powering the sewerage systems, Jefferson Parish residents are asked to limit all non-essential sewer services as much as possible during this time - this includes washing clothes, cleaning dishes and showering. Residents can continue using their essential sewer services, such as using the bathroom.

Garbage and Recycling Collection:
Curbside trash collection of bagged, household garbage placed in tipper carts only will resume Monday, September 6, 2021. Collection will occur on a limited basis, as driver’s return, downed power lines are cleared, and areas become assessable. Due to the severity of the storm, there will be delays in collection, and pick-up may not occur on your normal collection. Storm debris will be picked up separately be debris contractors starting Monday. Tree debris must be piled separately from construction/demolition debris (fence boards) for efficient collection. Make sure that each pile is clear of any electrical lines, water meters, mail boxes and fire hydrants. Curbside recycling collection will be suspended until further notice due to the need for extra personnel to focus on garbage collection.

Jefferson Transit Service:
Jefferson Transit has extended bus service suspension due to Hurricane Ida through Sunday, Sept. 5, 2021. Paratransit is operating for all dialysis trips and medical essential trips only. If you are in need of paratransit, please call 504-818-1077.

Entergy:
Entergy has announced preliminary estimated times of restoration. Click here for more information or visit the Entergy Hurricane Ida Information Hub.

Fuel:
Gas is very critical and lines at gas stations remain long for residents. Jefferson Parish is providing fuel to first-responders and critical government vehicles (i.e. water, sewer, streets, etc.) in order to continue responding to this emergency. Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng reiterated the need of gas to President Biden when he visited the area yesterday. For more information on the fuel shortage from President Lee Sheng, watch yesterday’s briefing.

Community Resources:
