JPRD HOSTS CORNHOLE CLINICS AND TOURNAMENT AHEAD OF AMERICAN CORNHOLE LEAGUE OPEN SERIES AT THE ALARIO CENTER

JEFFERSON, LA – This month, the Jefferson Parish Parks & Recreation Department (JPRD) is hosting a series of cornhole clinics, practice tournaments and a parish-wide tournament. These are scheduled leading up to the American Cornhole League (ACL) Open #9 Tournament, which is taking place at the Alario Center in Jefferson Parish this year from March 3-5, 2023.

“I’m very excited that Jefferson Parish has been chosen to host an Open Tournament for the American Cornhole League in March,” said Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng. “One of the goals of Recreation Reimagined is to bring in some new sports through our JPRD programming, and hosting this tournament really gives us the opportunity to do that.”

“This tournament is a great segue to what we were already starting to introduce through our JPRD programming,” said Mario Bazile, director of JPRD. “We are bringing professionals in to our playgrounds this month to teach the community how to play cornhole and we will host our own tournament so that the winners will go on to represent Jefferson Parish at the ACL Open #9 in March which will bring in participants from all over the country.”

The JPRD practice tournaments, clinics and parish-wide tournament are open to all ages. The practice tournaments will take place on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Ree Alario Center (6900 Saints Dr.), Avondale Playground (709 S. Jamie Blvd.) and Oakdale Playground (650 Wall Blvd.); as well as on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Delta Playground (8301 W. Metairie Ave.) and Terrytown Playground (641 Heritage Ave.).

JPRD cornhole clinics will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023 at Kings Grant Playground (3805 15th At.) and Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023 at Delta Playground. Cornhole Expert Sam Danton will be at these clinics offering instruction-based fundamentals of the game and will cover topics like equipment, scoring, types of bags and tossing techniques. The JPRD Qualifiers will take place on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023 at 3 p.m. at both Terrytown Playground and Delta Playground, and the final parish-wide tournament will be at Terrytown Playground on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023 at 1 p.m. Participants can complete in either singles or doubles. Each doubles team or singles will play three games in a Rounders format at the Qualifiers. Wins and losses will determine seeding for a best-of-three single-elimination tournament immediately following the Rounders. Point totals will be used as a tie breaker for seeding. The top ten in both the singles and doubles will advance to the Parish finals for a chance to win a JPRD/Lucky Bags sponsorship to the ACL Open Tournament, which will include the entry fee, a JPRD/ Lucky Bags cornhole jersey, a JPRD visor, and a set of ACL-approved Lucky Bags.

Those interested in competing in the JPRD Qualifiers must register at www.JPRD.com before Feb. 23, 2023. Cost is $10 registration fee per person. For more information, contact JPRD Zone Manager Jeb Kink at 504.349.5000 or JPRD Special Program Supervisor Brett Livaudais at 504.736.6999.
