LT. BILLY HAAS AND FIREFIGHTER DANNY ZEIGLER ANNOUNCED AS
HONOREES FOR THE 2019 FIREHOUSE MAGAZINE VALOR AWARDS

JEFFERSON, LA – Billy Haas and Firefighter Danny Zeigler from the Jefferson Parish East Bank Consolidated Fire Department were recently announced as honorees for the 2019 Firehouse Magazine Valor Awards. The Award of Valor recognizes acts of courage and bravery, including both physical acts to rescue a victim in hazardous conditions as well as critical decisions or preventative actions that ensured civilian or firefighter safety.

“This award could not have honored two better men,” said East Bank Consolidated Fire Department Chief Dave Tibbetts. “Their bravery, service and dedication to one of the most dangerous jobs is inspiring. This heroic story will encourage generations to come.”

On February 2, 2019, firefighters were having trouble trying to access a fire in the attic of a three-story apartment building when the decision was made to have Lt. Billy Haas and Firefighter Danny Zeigler use a ladder to access the roof and to cut a hole to gain access to the fire. Zeigler was cutting the roof when he fell through to the ceiling below. He was able to kick through the drywall to fall to the third floor. Haas jumped into rescue mode and was able to locate Zeigler in a minute and to remove him. Zeigler suffered extensive burns and required multiple surgeries to begin healing from his wounds. Haas suffered minor burns and was back to work the next day.
